This day at Teahupoo- Aug 27th 2011 during the Billabong Pro waiting period is what many are calling the biggest and gnarliest Teahupoo ever ridden. Chris Bryan was fortunate enough to be there working for Billabong on a day that will go down in the history of big wave surfing. The French Navy labeled this day a double code red prohibiting and threatening to arrest anyone that entered the water.Kelly Slater described the day by saying “witnessing this was a draining feeling being terrified for other peoples lives all day long, its life or death. Letting go of that rope one time can change your life and not many people will ever experience that in their life.” All images where shot by Chris Bryan using the Phantom HD Gold camera.

Terry Richardson’s new ad campaign for Equinox came under fire last week for portraying models who, according to some, looked thin and sickly instead of fit and gym-going. Either way, the pictures aren’t gym-related: Instead of photographing hot people in quasi-pornographic workout positions, as he’s done for Equinox before, Richardson portrayed them wearing skimpy, sweat-free cocktail attire while canoodling in a mansion. The ads are apparently meant to portray fun activities — like simultaneously walking three dogs while wearing stilettos and balancing on one foot — that an Equinox membership might enable you to do; the behind-the-scenes video shows just how complicated some of these activities really are. (Just you try holding table-top position on a tile floor in stiletto heels — well, actually, don’t.)

Its hard to hate AMC. After all, theyre still the network that brings us Mad Men and Breaking Bad, two of the best dramas on television. But with The Walking Dead, theyve really dropped the ball. Sam Witwer certainly feels that way. The Being Human star recently expressed his displeasure with the network over their firing of Frank Darabont — and of their nixing of Darabonts fantastic idea for the second season premiere.

“[The cast and crew of The Walking Dead] have been threatened to not speak out [about Darabonts firing],” Witwer told ParanormalPopCulture.com. “I mean, its ugly. Ive heard some reports from people who are there, on the ground, and its really, really ugly, what happened.”

THE VISION THING

BY RICK TETZELI

How Marty Scorsese risked it all and lived to risk again in Hollywood.

AT 69, AN AGE WHEN MOST HOLLYWOOD DIRECTORS have been packed off after a hollow cavalcade of plaudits, roasts, and nostalgic fetes, Martin Scorsese is once again panicked about hitting a deadline. His new movie is Hugo, a 3-D children’s movie being released by Paramount Pictures this Thanksgiving weekend, and Scorsese has never before directed in 3-D, nor, God knows, made anything resembling a kid flick. But this is what life is like for Marty, as everyone calls him. The director has achieved the trifecta of a fulfilling, creative life: enough money to do only what truly interests him, enough freedom to attack those projects in a way that is satisfying, and enough appreciation from his peers to tame–just slightly, just ever so slightly–the neurotic beast of self-doubt.

We were more than a little disappointed when Kevin Costner left Quentin Tarantinos Django Unchained a couple of weeks ago, but QT has recast someone even more awesome in the role: Kurt Russell.Yep, the former child actor and all-round 80s icon will be playing Ace, a cruel SOB who runs Calvin Candies Leonardo DiCaprio plantation with an iron fist, making the lives of the slaves unbearable. This isnt the first time Russell has stepped up to the plate for QT; he also replaced Mickey Rourke in Death Proof at the 11th hour and, in doing so, bagged one of his most badass roles in ages. With Ace, it sounds like Tarantino is going to exploit that side of Russell again, and we cant bloody wait to see the results.

An absolutely FUN sci-fi action comedy.

Props to writer/director Joe Cornish, for blurring the lines of fantasy and reality. This had great visuals and the characters felt real. Dark and vibrant at the same time. This urban sci-fi has something about it that just captures audiences…

Potty mouth kids battle “blackest black” creatures from another planet. The effects and creatures were simple and yet decent. What drove this film was the awesome bunch of troublemakers and their leader Moses. Played by 1st timerJohn Boyega - who did a good job as the rough and tough teen. The banter and wit was amusing to say the least.

Cyrus Sutton is a surfer. And hes reviewing Final Cut Pro X for Gizmodo. Why? Because hes one of the best surf flick directors in decades. His movies exude a summertime vibe I wish I could bottle up for winter. You see, most surfers are inherent detail oriented gear heads. Youre talking about a culture where a quiver of 6-12 boards isnt excessive, each with minute differences in shape and contour and material that turn out to cause varying rides on bumps of energy that happen to be passing through the water for a few fleeting seconds at a time. Waves. And Cyrus likes waves. Before he ran a site dedicated to a low-key DIY surfer lifestyle, korduroy.tv, he was a pro surfer representing some of the most commercialized big name surf brands out there. But Cyruss gearhead-ness comes in a form more relevant to us, as seen when he starts talking about his cameras, computer and the software that he uses to make his movies. And yet, Cyrus is one of those digital pros that has enough going on outside of the internet to be able to keep in touch with the needs of those of us who arent pros, too. Which reminds me a lot of what this version of Final Cut Pro stands for.
