“Big Meeting at the Studio”

By rariccardi | Filed in Uncategorized

One of the first major mistakes a newcomer makes in selling their idea is the assumption that the studio or broadcast entity they have finally secured a meeting with will actually serve as their funding source. In many instances the newcomers first encounter with ”decision makers” results in his first personal encounter with cardiac arrhythmia. Upon completion of his presentation the executives express great enthusiam for the newcomers “idea”; “Jeff we love it but who’s going to fund it?” The arrhythmia sets in and the newcomer responds; “I thought you were the guys who put up the money!”. The newcomer returns to his stuio apt. immediately gets on the phone and reports to to his underwriters [friends and family] that he has successfully sold his idea and all he has to do now is find the money to make it happen.

No other business is as notorious as the entertainment business when it comes to the downright devaluation of an “IDEA”. “IDEAS” cannot be copy written and in the “BIZ” ideas are stolen not only as a common practice but as a matter of principle. I am sure you have heard someone say that their idea was stolen or “I had that idea for a show and somehow they stole it from me.” Fact is millions of people share the same ideas and only a handful ever realize one and even rarer ever capitolize on it. What is the difference between those who succeed and those that moan and rage? Those who succeed know how to sell their idea.
