When Timmy Thompson, who made a lot of his money in oil field services, took a close look at the movie business a couple of years ago, he saw companies folding, credit collapsing and talent knocked down a peg in the aftermath of a labor war.

A flood of new investors, cautions Mr. Kosove, might easily expand the number of films being made, once again pushing up costs and making it difficult to find distributors. For the moment, however, “it’s a great time” for those with ready capital, said Rick Schwartz, a producer who has been aligned with Alan Bernon, a Texas dairy executive and investor.Among their projects is “Machete,” an over-the-top action caper that was directed by Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis, and took in about $26.6 million at the domestic box office after 20th Century Fox released it in September.Mr. Schwartz reckons that the film cost $10.5 million, after some help from a Texas subsidy program. Domestic rights went to Fox for about $9 million, and foreign rights, he said, brought nearly $12 million — so the film’s revenue to the producer and partners was roughly double its cost. And that, he said, “is a pretty good model.”

Reservoir Dogs

It seems unbelievable that the Reservoir Dogs warehouse was torn down, but I guess no one realised the significance at the time.Just imagine the tourist bucks, $5 entrance, Stealers Wheel CDs, souvenir rubber ears…. missed opportunity or what?Well you can still worship at the site it’s now – inevitably for Los Angeles – a parking lot or check out the alleyways of the bloody shootout after the robbery.

This is a lovely little jingle for all the editors and post-production professionals out in the world who have ever had to deal with clients and agencies who don’t understand the meaning of ROUGH CUT!

Charlie Sheen’s Winning Recipes from Charlie Sheen

He’s obviously with it enough to appreciate that what he’s doing is, in many ways, absurd. And he’s level-headed enough to poke fun at himself while getting fired from one of the highest paying gigs in television history. Maybe Sheen did have some sort of breakdown and decide to give Hollywood and the world at large the finger, but maybe he’s more in control of his train wreck than we give him credit for and we shouldn’t put Miss Ratched in control of his cigarette consumption just yet.

NELLIE ANDREEVA

In August, New York State’s Film Production Tax Credit Program was extended and expanded to $420 million per year. Several months later, pilot production in the Big Apple is back in a big way. Nine broadcast drama pilots are filming there now, including such high-profile entries as NBC’s Prime Suspect and Smash, ABC’s Pan Am and CBS’ Susannah Grant. That is up from zero last year. The pilot for CBS’ New York-set Blue Bloods only shot some footage there.

Eat Me Zombie

While still working on his career in locations, Rocco has also recently launched his own independent production house, Nisivoccia Films. Taking what he’s learned about the industry, he and his team have already developed two short independent films, as well as a documentary, which they’re shopping around to different distributors. One of those two shorts – a zombie film called Eat Me – will be screening at the New York No Limits Film Festival in March and the Garden State Film Festival in April.“It’s funny to think about my first days on a set after I graduated, where I was just in awe of everything going on around me,” he says. “I was all wide-eyed, looking at this gigantic crew bringing a movie to life. Now I’m right there in the middle of it helping to make it all happen, and even making my own movies. It’s a great feeling.”Check out the website for Rocco’s zombie short film Eat Me at www.eatmezombie.com.

Michael Moore: America Is Not Broke

By rariccardi | Filed in directors

Contrary to what those in power would like you to believe so that you’ll give up your pension, cut your wages, and settle for the life your great-grandparents had, America is not broke. Not by a long shot. The country is awash in wealth and cash. It’s just that it’s not in your hands. It has been transferred, in the greatest heist in history, from the workers and consumers to the banks and the portfolios of the uber-rich.
